The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig

🖤🖤🖤🖤

I really wanted to love this book but something just didn’t quite click for me. It took longer to finish than I expected, and I never fully felt that “can’t put it down” pull.

That said, I DID like it. The gothic atmosphere is great, and the story itself is refreshingly different. Sybil is a diviner at Aisling Cathedral, where she and five other foundlings interpret visions from the omens and people from all across Traum come seeking glimpses of their future. When the devilishly handsome knight named Myndacious arrives with the boy king, he makes it clear he doesn’t believe in omens or in Sybil’s visions. But when her fellow diviners begin to vanish, she’s forced to turn to him for help. There’s also the slow burn tension between the two that simmers nicely throughout the story, full of prickly banter and guarded moments that hint at something more. (We all know where it’s going though!)

I love, love, loved the bat gargoyle. Honestly, he might have been my favourite character of the whole book.

While it didn’t totally sweep me away, I’m invested enough to pick up the next book. I definitely want to know where this all leads.
