I had high hopes for this book, and I’m happy to report that it didn’t disappoint! It’s a solid witchy read with plenty of intrigue and magic woven throughout.
The story begins when Emily’s father passes away unexpectedly, and her life is turned upside down. Uprooted from her home in Wales, Emily is sent to live in Savannah with a grandmother and aunt she never even knew existed. But it doesn’t take long for strange things to start happening, and Emily quickly learns that not everything is as it seems.
One of the standout aspects was the Savannah setting. The city’s old-world charm really shines through, and it’s blended with pop culture references to keep things feeling fresh and modern.
I will admit, though, I had a bit of an ‘ugh’ moment when the word “unalive” was used. Personally, I don’t think it has a place in books, but I understand why the author might have opted for it.
While I could pretty much guess the direction the plot was heading early on, there were still plenty of twists and turns that kept me hooked until the end. The characters were all really well-written too. I found the relationship between Emily and Wyn adorable, and emphasized with Ashley.
Overall, I’m excited to see where the rest of the trilogy goes. This first instalment was a promising start!
